Tech Update: Tracking Firefighter Movements Inside Buildings: Part II

Overview: GPS alone was never enough inside buildings to track a firefighter. However, when GPS is combined with certain radio frequencies and advanced software, firefighter movements can be tracked, even inside multiple story buildings.

Once a firefighter is down, there is often no more than 3 minutes to get him/her out before it becomes a body recovery operation. Obtaining rescuer location data in GPS-denied zones can save lives when the PASS device isn't enough. When a firefighter goes down their PASS device is activated setting off an audible alarm and a flashing strobe; however, his does not indicate their exact location. Seventeen lives were lost in 2007 that have been potentially attributed to PASS device failures, or the inability of the extraction teams to find the firefighter in time.

With the latest technological advances, firefighters could be tracked to their closest approximate position on a specific floor as long as their radio equipment could still communicate with the Command and Control Vehicle. Command can visually track the movement and pinpoint the location of firefighters at all times.

Part II of Tracking Fighfighters Indoors will give a short overview of topics discussed in Part I, including a review of five products from various vendors, plus two of the latest new products that are about to hit the market. We will also discuss preliminary grant/funding opportunities.

Chief Billy Goldfeder presents in video, audio, and "Wake Up" lecture an in-depth review of specific and timely fireground events. His focus on dwelling fires that ended with tragic results is intended to convey lessons learned so that the incidents, and those involved, are never forgotten.   Chief Goldfeder delivers in a unique, high-energy style that is professional and respectful. He provides attendees with information that can be applied immediately on the fireground in order to prevent history from repeating itself.   The goal of the program is to impress upon firefighters and fire officers the importance of their roles and responsibilities during response and rescue operations. Case studies are presented in a manner that will educate, entertain, and ensure the safety of all.   Participants will not only learn "Everyone Goes Home" but also understand "Who's in YOUR Wallet?" Register online at http://www.nipsta.org.

Today's fireground should be a calm and orchestrated event, but often it is not!

Fewer fires, mass attrition, and little or no command training have created an era in today's fire service where the simple "bread and butter" house fire is a sentinel event.

The NIOSH top 5 line of duty death causes on the fireground surround size up, command, communications, accountability and SOP's.

Participate in simulations for house fires, garden/center hall apartments, commercial, highrise, wildland, MCI, hazardous materials incidents and review actual incidents.

This intense, hands-on and interactive workshop hits these issues head on and will simplify the components of tactics & strategy, SOP's and ICS.  We synthesize these 3 key ingredients to help you drastically improve the way you command your next incident or handle your upcoming assessment center!  Don't believe the lie that you cannot prepare for the test and the job at the same time.  The military, airlines, and NASA do it, and it's about time the fire service did!

    Who should attend?

    • Current officers who desire to dramatically improve their fireground command abilities
    • Aspiring officers who desire to develop a system for outstanding performance for the test and the job
    • Training officers who desire the latest in tactical training

Franklin, TN - Have you always wanted to try out the "Jaws of Life," break down a door, ride in a platform at the top of a 100' aerial ladder truck, or put the "wet stuff on the red stuff?" Then the Franklin Fire Department's Citizens' Fire Academy is for you!

This year's program will take place April 8 - May 27.  During this eight-week, hands-on program, participants ride along on fire calls and fire inspections, learn how to operate hose lines and other fire equipment, perform vehicle extrication and search and rescue, learn CPR ,and ride in a platform at the top of a ladder truck. Live firefighting is the course finale, where participants use all of the knowledge and skills they've learned to extinguish fires and get everyone out of the building safely.  On the live firefighting night, Franklin Firefighters are stationed throughout the burn tower to operate the live fire props and assist the participants.

Franklin Fire Captain Ben Marler, who coordinates the academy, started the program in 2007 with the support of Franklin Fire Chief Rocky Garzarek. The program has had 36 graduates to date. Marler said the academy was created to help educate the community, gain support and promote fire safety.

The program is offered to people who live and work in Franklin.  Participants must be at least 21 years of age, and commit to attending seven of the eight classes. The group meets at the Franklin Fire Training Center on Century Court on Thursday evenings. There is no cost for the program.
